Important Safety Information from the Madison Lake Police Department

E-bikes and e-scooters are becoming more popular across our communities. While they are a great way to get around, we’re seeing an increase in unsafe and illegal use on our streets, sidewalks, and trails. To help keep everyone safe, the Madison Lake Police Department will be actively enforcing Minnesota’s e-bike and motorized bicycle laws. Violations may result in citations issued to riders and, in some cases, parents or guardians of juvenile riders.

Minnesota recognizes three classes of e-bikes, all with a maximum motor output of 750 watts. Class 1 e-bikes provide pedal assist only and can reach speeds up to 20 mph. Class 2 e-bikes include both throttle and pedal assist capabilities and can also reach speeds up to 20 mph. Class 3 e-bikes provide pedal assist only and can reach speeds up to 28 mph, with throttle assistance limited to 20 mph. Motorized bicycles, which do not have pedals, may travel up to 30 mph and require the operator to possess a valid driver’s license or permit. Riders under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when operating a motorized bicycle.

Riders should remember several important rules. Operators must be at least 15 years old, obey all traffic laws including stop signs, traffic signals, and speed limits, and may not modify bikes or scooters to exceed legal speed restrictions. Riders should always yield to pedestrians, ride courteously, and operate their vehicles responsibly. While helmets are not currently required for e-bike riders, they are strongly recommended for riders of all ages.

Violations of Minnesota law may result in fines and the impoundment of bikes until an authorized, legal rider can retrieve them.
